Zondagochtend 03u50 de mast van TISCALI komt in drie stukken naar beneden terwijl hij surfend 16 tot 20 knopen haalde.
De Italiaanse Around Alone zeiler Simone Bianchetti heeft geen verwondingen opgelopen daar hij benedendeks was en probeert nu onder noodtuig de resterende 90 mijl te zeilen naar La Coruna in noord Spanje.
De Around Alone race voorziter Robin Knox-Johnston reageert:
" We are desperately sorry to hear of Tiscali's dismasting. Simone is a tough and experienced sailor and this will be a great frustration to him. We hope he can clear the mess of mast and rigging from the boat and be able to make a safe port quickly. Since Around Alone is scored on a points system and not elapsed time, Simone could only earn minimum points for this leg if he is able to find a replacement mast and rejoin the race, and this would give him 3 more legs to catch up and show us his metal."
Dit betekent dat Simone Bianchetti onder zeil in Cape Town moet geraken om de race verder te zetten.
Ondertussen hebben de ander klas 1 boten weer een nacht overleefd in de zware storm en de enige vrouw in de race Emma Richards is met haar PINDAR op de 2de plek nu.
