Mike Golding en Brian Tompson behouden nog steeds de leiding sinds de start van de Transat Jacques Vabre 2003. De monohull schepen hebben hun eerste opkuisronde mogen meemaken. Pitstops en opgaven zijn schering en inslag nu, maar de nieuwe Owen Clark Ecover houd stand in de ruige storm op zee.
Zelfs met continu 40 knopen wind op hun bakkes kunnen Golding en Thompson goed voor zichzelf en de boot zorgen. Sommige schepen zitten al in overlevingsmodus terwijl zij goede vooruitgang maken door de Golf van Biskaje tussen Cape Finisterre en Ushant.
Wanneer de wedstrijdleiding gisteren contact had met Golding was hij voor zichzelf een volledig Engels ontbijt aan het klaarmaken:
"We are both pretty happy. This morning’s been a bit slow because we’ve been sorting everything out after the bad weather. We had the mainsail down this morning to replace a broken batten, inevitably with a new boat there’s the odd ping - given the conditions we’re not going to get away without some small failures on the boat. We’re now at 100% again. We’re making good progress, but the first rule is to take care of the boat, we’ve got to arrive to finish. The sea is still rough, but the wind has eased to 17-18 knots. I am just about to make a good English fry-up - nothing like bacon and eggs to start the day off with!"
