De Defi Atlantique race heeft de laatste 24u extreme momenten gehad. Virbac ligt zonder mast te dobberen op de oceaan, 400 mijl ten Noordoosten van de Cape Verde eilanden. Het is belangrijk voor Jean Pierre op Virbac dat hij in de race blijft.
Hij wil zo snel mogelijk een noodtuig opzetten om alsnog binnen de tijdlimiet te finishen, want de Defi atlantique is een kwalificatie race voor de Vendée Globe in 2004. Virbac heeft nog meer dan 2000 zeemijl voor de boeg.

dismast with no sails up!" zei Jean Pierre gisteren tegen zijn shorecrew.
"The boat was under full main and genoa on
starboard tack, when the deck fitting for the Port D1 shroud broke off."

Ecover botst tegen UFO
Mike Golding op Ecover komt met minder kleerscheuren uit de strijd. Hij botste met zijn gloednieuwe Open 60 tegen een half gezonken object. Op het moment van de aanvaring was de soloschipper onderdeks. Er is zichtbare schade aan de boeg maar het object raakte ook de kiel en een van de zwaarden.
Goldings commentaar: "Fortunately there is no big damage, as the bow is designed to take an impact of this sort, so this shouldn't slow me down too much. Can't find any water in the boat, there's nothing obvious and all the foils seem to be there. I can't tell if the keel is twisted, but if there was anything major, I'd know about by now. There was a big bump, bump, bump as it hit the bow, then dagger board, then the keel. There was lightening all round and no moon, it was pretty scary."
