Het Mike Golding Yacht Racing Team aan boord van Ecover verhoogt de aanvals- frequentie op Bonduelle en wil kost wat kost naar de eerste plek. Tijdens de laatste uren van de 1000 Milles de Calias race deze twee koplopers van mekaar gescheiden. Ze vechten momenteel tegen de getijden in het kanaal, Ecover meer in het centrum terwijl Bonduelle voor de nabijheid van de Britse kustlijn kiest.
Het team van Mike Golding zou in dit taktisch spelletje wel eens voor de verrassingen kunnen zorgen want deze crew haar thuisbasis is Southampton (GBR). Met hun lokale kennis moeten zij normaal gezien beter op de hoogte zijn van de lokale kustlijn en getijden. De wind is zwak, dit maakt het effect van het getij zeer groot, voorruitgang boeken verloopt voor beiden moeizaam.
Mike Golding legt zijn strategie uit:
"We've had very light weather over the last few hours, with very little wind, but we're on the move again now. We've got a light northerly, which is very shifty, so we've changed sails many times. There's a gennaker going up as we speak. In these conditions it is difficult making gains, but there's still some options in the Channel and always a chance to try a different route. That's what we are doing. We want to avoid the coast and stay in the middle. Some times its good to be inshore and some times its good to be out. In conditions like this, the wind isn't reliable enough to move about the course. Our goal is to win, not to come second, so we don't just want to follow Bonduelle."
Brian Tompson vertelt meer over de exclusieve gasten die ze aan boord kregen:
"We have had a flying visit from a group of swallows, about 10 of them that have decided to hitch a ride on board Ecover instead of taking the ferry from Ireland. They landed with a great deal of noise as they talked to each other, jostling for the best seats and ignoring the crew! They took up residency on the life-lines, winches and ropes before finding the best spot nestled together on my hat down below. A very cute sight, but I may not be using that hat for the rest of the trip...!"
Bij het publiceren van dit bericht liep de Belgisch gekleurde Ecover 2.4 mijl sneller dan Bonduelle.
