Zonet bereikte ons via de traditionele perskanalen het bericht dat de 47 jarige Glenn Bourke, wegens familiale redenen, ontslag neemt als algemeen directeur (CEO) van de Volvo Ocean Race organisatie.
Het was een moeilijk beslissing voor Glenn Bourke, die sinds 2002 aan het roer stond van 's werelds grootste offshore oceaan zeilrace.
Glenn Bourke zal in 2008 van Engeland terug naar zijn thuisland Australië verhuizen.
"Glenn has done a fantastic job for the Volvo Ocean Race and for Volvo since 2002 and it’s very sad to see him leave” vertelt gerry Keany, Voorzitter van het Volvo Event Manegement bestuur en Senior Vice President van de Volvo Car Corporation.
"We understand his wish to be closer to his family and children in Australia. We realise that it will be very difficult to find a replacement for Glenn,” vult Keany aan.

Familiale redenen speelden een belangrijke rol in de beslissing om ontslag te nemen
"It’s no secret to those people who know me well that being so far away from my family for so many years has been stressful at times. My children are now at an age where I feel I need to be spending more time with them. Ultimately they come first on my list of priorities."

Over Glenn Bourke
Voordat Glenn Bourke CEO werd van de Volvo Ocean Race organisatie vervulde hij eenzelfde rol bij het Illbruck Challenge syndicaat, de 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race winnaars.
Glenn Bourke - 1991Als zeiler won Glenn Bourke 3 Laser Wereldkampioenschappen en nam in 1992 deel aan de Olympische spelen in de Finn klasse. In 1996 werd hij Australisch coach.
Glenn maakte de switch van competitie zeilen naar event management door competitie directeur te worden tijdens de Olympische Spelen van 2000 in Sydney.
Ook de America's Cup is geen onbekend terrein voor Glenn Bourke, als verdediger voor Kookaburra in 1987, en als uitdager, tacticus aan boord van Australia One in 1995. Glenn was ook coach van Team Dennis Conner, de New York Yacht Club uitdager voor Louis Vuitton Cup 2002-03 en America's Cup in Auckland.
