Ben Ainslie (GBR) wil kost wat kost de America’s Cup naar Groot-Brittannië halen. De grote vraag blijft of het hem gaat lukken. Het is de Engelsen sinds het ontstaan van de Auld Mug in 1851 nog nooit gelukt om hem te winnen. Deze week was het D-Day voor BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing). Vanuit hun tijdelijke basis in Southampton is het Britse America’s Cup team voor de eerste keer het water op gegaan met hun aangepaste AC45.
Deze gemodificeerde AC45 heeft nog onder de BAR kleuren geraced tijdens de America’s Cup World Series in 2012-13 en werd door het team gemodificeerd om te vliegen op hydrofoils.
Ben Ainslie vertelt op zijn fanpagina:
“Ten months ago we had nothing, so to be out there today foiling in one of these boats – after such a short time frame – is the result of a huge amount of effort from all of the team, especially the shore team and the designers. For us sailors it’s a real privilege to get out there and sail one of these boats. It’s been a great first day and it’s a good start, but it’s only a start and we have a lot of work to do over the coming months.”
