Vandaag werd bekend gemaakt dat de Franse stad Lorient als stopover weerkeert en de Volvo Ocean Race route compleet maakt. Met Lorient erbij worden nu tien steden over negen landen aangedaan en brengt de zeilers rond de wereld in 39.895 zeemijl, de langste route ooit. De Volvo Ocean Race, één van de zwaarste oceaan zeilraces, zal op 4 oktober 2014 starten met de eerste In-Port Race in Alicante (ESP) en op 27 juni 2015 eindigen met de finale In-Port Race in Gothenburg (SWE).
“This route has never really been part of any ocean race any time before,” vertelt Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad. “And when you have that element there’s a new strategy, there’s a new route, there’s new weather, there’s new challenges for the sailors. That is exciting, not only for us but for the sailors because no-one can claim they’ve done this before.”
