Sail-World.com reageert op het bericht Toerklasse toegevoegd aan Vuurschepenrace 2011. Dit North Sea Regatta persbericht werd onlangs ook internationaal verspreid door de press officer van dienst en opgepikt door één van ‘s werelds meest bekende websites voor toerzeilers. Sail-World.com redactrice Nancy Knudsen reageert bitsig en wil aan iedereen duidelijk maken dat toerzeilen geen ‘second-class racing’ is.
Cruising is volgens Nancy Knudsen zeilen op een niet competitieve manier, over korte of lange afstand, meestal in afgelegen gebieden. En in zijn beste voorbeeld getypeerd door onafhankelijkheid, vrijheid en avontuur met liefde voor de natuurlijke wereld van de oceanen en zijn zeeleven.
En ik die dacht dat de definitie van toerzeilen de boot van racehaven A naar racehaven B brengen was, gezellig samen met je partner en met de nodige omweg als we de tijd hebben. Niet dus. Ik heb weeral wat bijgeleerd vandaag, hieronder leest u het onvertaalde bericht.
‘Cruising is not second-class racing’
I found it interesting that in an announcement by the organisers of the North Sea Regatta they imply that it is now a race for professionals and observe that ‘recreational’ sailors have been dropping out.
This is accompanied by the announcement of a new ‘cruising class’. This is a common, but gross misrepresentation of the meaning of cruising and does disservice to all the fine cruising sailors in the world.
Cruising, if it needs to be said, is not second-class racing. Cruising is non-competitive sailing, over short or long distances, often into remote areas. In its best examples, it is typified by a sense of independence, freedom and adventure, innovativeness in the face of challenge and a love of the natural world of the ocean and its sealife.
